Holland Ice Park
The one million dollar catalyst gift from retired school teacher Frank Kraai inspired the people of Holland to construct one of the best ice park facilities for a community of our size anywhere. Of the $11.5 million budget, only $2 million came from local taxpayer funds. The rest was private donations and state and federal grant dollars. It is truly an example of a community Working Together to create a gathering place where memories will be made, stories will be told, and laughter will be heard for generations to come.
There will be an ice pond, a ribbon of ice extending into the park, a curling rink, skate rental, and a warming house with hot chocolate. Frank insisted on hot chocolate. There will also be two fireplaces, one only accessible to skaters on the ribbon. We will be installing glass garage doors between the two main buildings so you non-skaters can stay warm while you watch. And as you can see, much of the plaza will be snow melted.
We have enough cooling power for 3 NHL rinks and we estimate we will be able to skate 4-5 months a year. But not to worry, our Recreation Department team has plans to program the facility all year round. We have already contracted with Velo Kids to be the site of their summer programing and we have created a small amphitheater in eastern hillside so kids can do plays and other performances. There are so many opportunities. Garrett and his team at Parks and Rec can’t wait to share their great ideas.
It will cost $10 to skate for a 90 minute session and that will include skate rental. Then our cool Zamboni will come out and clean the ice for the next group of skaters. We will have learn to skate sessions local school districts at cost as well as opportunities for the general public to come learn on weekends. We will have the full fee schedule available soon. Our goal is to make it as available and affordable as possible while maintaining a great experience. I am sure we will learn a lot the first year so be prepared for changes and adjustments along the way.
It has been a wonderful journey these last few years working with Frank, the donors, our amazing staff, the planners and designers, the construction crew and the people Holland to help make a dream become a reality. It will be a destination for thousands and a legacy that will live on in Holland’s history. I am proud to have played a small part in making it happen.
Thank you, Frank.
